Ghana Week 1 Photo Recap

We have officially been in Accra, Ghana for one week. We have had a full schedule with experiences that could fill multiple books already. The blog entries provide an excellent view into the experiences but as they say, a picture is worth a thousand words, and we have been taking a lot of pictures. So here are a few of the photos from this past week. If you have any questions, please let us know in the comments.

The group is ready to fly at the MSP Airport.

Brief layover in Amsterdam

Arriving late in Ghana on New Year's eve. Loading our bus and heading to our hotel.

Our first Ghanaian meal at our hotel. Jollof rice at 11pm local time, 5pm back home.

Back on the bus for our first full day in Accra

First stop, the W.E.B DuBois Centre

We stopped for lunch and ran into American music artist Vic Mensa. He is one of the organizers and headliners of the Black Star Fest. His father is from Ghana.

Some of the students tried their first meal of Fufu.

Morning updates at the hotel after breakfast.

We spent the morning at the Haatso market connecting with the vendors and residents.

Then we made our way to the Aburi Botanical Garden in the afternoon.
Day 5 started with a cultural competency lesson in the SIT program office which is a couple houses away from our hotel.

We spent the afternoon at Mckingtorch Africa learning about their work with plastic recycling.

The next morning we visited the University of Ghana for a tour and lunch with some of the students.

Day 6 ended with Salsa night at Afrikiko

On day 7 we heard from Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang (Ghana’s Vice Presidential Candidate for the NDC party), who is actually the mother of our program director here in Ghana.
That night we showed off our Karaoke skills.

Lunch at Fiona's Kitchen where we discussed the roles and expectations of women in Ghana with Bashiratu Kamal (Bash) and Fiona Morton.

We took the afternoon off and rested up for the Black Star Line Fest. There were over 50k people in attendance at the free concert held at Black Star Square.
